Description
Charlie + WobbsThe time has finally arrived, the time for a fully functional mechanical wooden clock. The Aero Clock is a lovely piece of precise engineering that reveals the workings of a weighted pendulum clock to builders and viewers alike. And like all UGears models, it also has that extra touch of whimsy, to captivate and charm.
This simple yet elegant clock is driven by the force of gravity pulling down on a weighted bag (you can fill the bag with sand or salt). Raise the bag on its pulleys to wind the clock. As the weight slowly descends, it rotates a drive gear, which then rotates an escape wheel through a reducer.
The clock features an adjustable weighted pendulum which interacts with the escape wheel through the steady tick-tock of the anchor mechanism. You can adjust the clock's ticking action to the second by sliding the pendulum's top and bottom weights. The reducer also transmits rotation to an hour and minute disc.
One of the interesting features of the Aero Clock is that time is not read with rotating hands on a face, but rather a fixed pointer indicates the time on slowly rotating, numbered hour and minute discs. The Aero Clock features a model hot air balloon. The suspended balloon rapidly descends when the hour strikes, then slowly rises again over the course of the next hour.
Building the timepiece reveals many of the basic principles behind how clocks work, how the steadying influence of a swinging pendulum operates through a rocking anchor, locking and unlocking the gears on an escapement one second at a time, thereby regulating the descent of a weight as it drives both power and timekeeping gears.
Like all other UGears kits, the Aero Clock comes with step-by-step, full-color, truly easy to follow instructions in multiple languages and requires neither glue nor special tools to be assembled into a fully functional timepiece.
320 pieces, 29.5 x 18.5 x 6.5 inches when finished. Assembly time: ~11 hours. Recommended age: 14+
Ideal Christmas, birthday, or holiday gift for an engineer, hobbyist, or craftsperson. Great for a STEAM related gift too!

At Charlie + Wobbs, trees are kinda our thing. Not only do trees provide the beautiful pieces of wood that goes into all of our products, but they also help provide the cardboard our boxes are made from, the paper packing material to keep everything safe during shipment, the cardstock our flyers are printed on, the paper towels used during production, and most importantly, the air we breathe just to be alive. We'd kinda be up a creek without a paddle, wooden or otherwise, without them. When properly managed, trees are an amazing and 100% renewable resource... really the ultimate renewable resource; products derived from them literally grow on trees! And to help preserve them Charlie + Wobbs pledges to donate one percent of the revenue of every order to non-profit organizations whose missions are sustainable forestry and mitigating the effects of climate change. This way we can help keep the forests of the world growing forward.
